Jesus starts the sermon on the mount with the blessings or you could say the ways to be happy and content. There are a lot of verses and we aren’t going to break down each verse here but there is a theme with these verses that I want us to look at. Read each verse and see if you can see it. See you after you read the verses.
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Did you see the theme? Great, but for those that missed it here it is. The theme is all about serving Jesus and being thankful. Happiness comes from knowing that you are forgiven, that you are saved and that our time here is short but our time in heaven with Jesus is forever and that is were our focus needs to be.
What you don’t see in any of these verses is the world. Money, fame, power, sex, drugs and alcohol, lusts of the flesh. None of the worldly pleasures lead to happiness or blessings. They only lead to our misery and disappointment. They lead to pain and sickness; they lead us away from God and our families. God is trying to bless us and take care of us but we keep running away chasing the idea that getting things and stuff in this world will bring us fulfillment and joy. No matter how many times we end up dissapointed and sad we still leave God behind to chase aftetr the next worly thing that will do it. I know it didn't work the last 20 times but this time it will. My friends its a lie and we know were lies come from the prince of lies and heartache. The worldly pleasures don't work because they are from the devil and not from God.
Chaseing after the world doesn't just hurt us it causes pain and suffering for those we love as well. We are wrapped up in serving our flesh with the idea that we will focus on our families just as soon as a make that first million, or as soon as I get enough money to retire, then I will give my life to God. Or I will spend time with my kids and my spouse. But God doesn’t wait for you to serve yourself. And neither does your family. You will just end up sad and depressed and alone when you serve the flesh.
Studies show that rich people are amongst the most depressed group of people. Why is that? Because serving the flesh and the world is depressing. You spend all your time trying to make money and never spend anytime with your loved ones or with Jesus. Your stressed out trying to get ahead. There is no satisfaction in money. No matter how much you make you just keep needing to make more, and more.
Let Jesus carry your burdens. Follow these wonderful words of our Savior Jesus Christ and be content with serving Him. Follow Christ and He will give you peace and rest and pure happiness that can’t be earned or bought with money or found in a bottle. Don't believe the beer commercial that claims happiness is drinking a beer on the beach. You know that is a lie. Happiness can only come from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. Our focus must be on our souls and not our flesh. Yes there will be sad times and hardships still but you will have the soul filling love of Jesus to get you through it and the peace of knowing that our time of suffering and trials here is so short but our pure joy and happiness that comes from being with Jesus forever and ever lasts for all of eternity and that is the real happiness. That is the gift that can only be accepted with great joy and can not be earned or paid for. Jesus all ready paid the bill, there is nothing more for you to do. All the work is done, relax and enjoy your gift.
If you haven’t given your life to Jesus yet, now is the time, today is the day to receive the Holy Spirit and change your misery into joy.
Pray this simple but powerful prayer:
LORD I am a sinner, please forgive me, I know you died on the cross for me and was raised on the 3rd day, please come into my life as LORD and I will do whatever you want me to do.
Say this prayer and show Jesus that you meant it by living to serve Him.
Please let us know if you said this prayer. We would love to help you and pray for you.
I pray that this has been a blessing to you.
