Did Jesus go to hell during the 3 days he was in the tomb? That sounds like a ridiculous question, but there are a lot of Pastors who teach this.

They quote different scriptures and they say things like He had to take the full punishment for our sins so that is why he went to hell. This like many false teachings is nonsense.

If He had to go to hell to finish the work, then why did He say on the cross it is finished? John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Because it was finished the moment He died on the cross. We have other scripture from Luke that makes it very clear that Jesus did not go to hell. What did Jesus say to the thief on the cross?

Luke 23:42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” 43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

He did not say to the thief, you go to paradise and I will see you there in 3 days after I get back from hell. Another verse from the mouth of our Lord Jesus.

Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.

God is certainly not in hell so if Jesus's spirit was lifted up to His Father then that would mean Jesus was in heaven and is in heaven.

Another big problem with this idea is people including so-called Bible teachers confuse hell and hades. Hell is the lake of fire where the Antichrist and the false prophet will go and then at a later time Satan and all of his followers will go. Hades is the bad side of paridse. Before Jesus died and was resurrected the saints went to paradise or Abraham's bosom and the unsaved went to hades on the other side of the large gulf. So hell and hades are not the same place. Jesus went to the paradise side or Abraham's bosom and got the OT saints and took them to heaven. He did not go to hell. We always go to the Bible for answers so what does it say about hades and Abraham's bosom?

Luke 16:22 “So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 “And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’

25 “But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

26 ‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

The verse that the false teachers use to claim this nonsense is

1 Peter 3:19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

If you read the verses that follow this verse it does not support the notion that verse 19 is saying He went to hell. Peter doesn't tell us what he said and in the original Greek, the meaning is proclaimed something not preached the gospel.

The last point for why Jesus did not go to hell is, why would he? Once you are dead and have been judged to eternity in hell there is no getting out. So was Jesus going there just to make fun of the condemned? We know He wouldn't do that. It breaks His heart that anyone is there. He would have no reason or need to go there.

This is why the false teachers who teach this say well it was to complete the work, to take the full punishment. but that means you have to call Jesus a liar since Jesus himself said on the cross just before he died that it was finished. The scriptures they try to use have to be twisted and misinterpreted badly to reach the conclusion that Jesus went to hell. And if you have to work that hard to make the scripture say what you want it to say then that is a big red flag that you are wrong and you need to stop.

So next time a Pastor or anyone says Jesus went to hell, know that is a lie from hell and is not true.
